Kobe’s Chance
Jun 5, 2008 Author: tyronebiggums | Filed under: BasketballYeah yeah the Celtics and Lakers are getting ready to face off yet again for an NBA championship, but please spare me the rivalry renewed nonsense these franchises haven’t meet in the finals in over 20 years I have a hard time thinking Kobe and Lamar Odom wanna get a ring for the showtime Lakers and make them proud. Sure thats a nice added bonus but lets be real these guys are trying to win for them and for now, history is irrelevant except for of course when you take into consideration that this could go a very long way to establishing the legacy of one Kobe Bean Bryant. Over the course of the season I was one of the most adamant that Chris Paul should of won MVP, I can say it now, no matter how much it hurts, I was wrong. There is no one player more important to his teams success and it all starts with him buying into the team concept. I thought the Spurs might of been able to derail that train of thought but it only took Kobe the first half of game one to snap out of it and see what they were doing and how to attack it. So David Stern got what he wanted ( I’m stunned really you should see my face, sorry sarcasm button is broke again ) and 2 of the most storied franchises with 2 of the biggest fan bases have made the finals a perfect storm for Stern and the NBA. On one side you got Kevin Garnett everyones favorite player, seriously good luck trying to find someone say a bad word about K.G. and if you do manage to hear it you can literally feel the bitterness and jealously seeping through the words, teamed up with 2 more all-star vets who people actually wanna root for. On the other side you got L.A., yeah Hollywood will be out in full force which Stern will no doubt love but more importantly you got Kobe aka the black mamba getting ready to really put the game in a choke hold. People who know me know I’m a Kobe hater always have been, from watching him as a spoiled egotistical punk right out of high school to driving Shaq off the Lakers and the hate grew to an all time high when he snitched on Shaq when he was hemmed up with that mishap in Colorado. However at some point in the middle of the season, I’m not quite sure when it happened, I couldn’t allow myself to hate on the man anymore. Sure he comes across more smug and arrogant as ever, sure he seems to be forcing smiles and putting on a show as contrived and fake as can be but watch him play basketball and all the rest because moot. True no matter how good someone is at a sport doesn’t mean they are good people but Kobe will never be anything other than a basketball player in my life so thats all I can and am willing to judge him on, basically I’m making myself be objective because well he is that good. So while everyone is eager to try and restore the historic rivalry
or argue great defense vs. great offense my main focus is on Kobe Bryant and him trying to stake his claim as the best to ever play the game.
* Patiently waits for the Jordan Stan’s to come out with their preprogrammed thoughts and ideas of how since Jordan was the first player to convince them to spend over 100 $ on a pair of shoes, they fell for the not so subliminal advertising and literally wanted to be like Mike and after all Jordan started in a movie with Bugs Bunny so there no way anyone will ever be a better basketball player than him. *
Theres this theory some guy named Darwin came up with, something involving evolution, basically things adapting and getting better throughout time, whether you believe we evolved from cavemen or monkeys there is no denying that on some level evolution is real and in sports there is a very strong evolutionary process. People playing sports today are bigger faster stronger and more athletic naturally, add to the fact that athletes today spend the majority of their lives either playing or practicing their sport and it only stands that players on a whole are much better and more talented than players from 20 years ago. Theres more focus on the sport from a very young age and much less extracurricular activities to distract the athletes. So if the players as a whole are better than that means the competition is stronger and better which means if you don’t step your game up you won’t make it and will be left behind. Is there a bigger difference between Jordan and the second best player of his time than the difference between Kobe and the second best player today ( Lebron ) ? Hell yeah of course the overall level of competition is so much better than 10-20 years ago but theres isn’t a single facet of the game that I would say Jordan is more talented than Kobe at, not one. Like I said before Kobe’s stronger faster more athletic, Jordan was known for his great D and knack to score at will, sound familiar ? Kobe is a better pure shooter a better team player when he decides he wants to be one and this year he has made up his mind thats who he wants to be, he doesn’t want to just be that amazing unreal talent he wants to be the best player to ever have played this game and right now he is just one series away from achieving that goal. Now thats not to say that the Lakers winning the championship will automatically grant him that honor but if they win it the way I expect them to with Kobe playing the way I expect than yes this will not even be debatable with anyone who is either sane or rational, don’t need to be both, ones good enough to come to this realization.
They say defense wins championships but then again they say the best defense is a good offense, so what gives ? The Celtics do have a great D no doubt about it but there offense leaves a lot to be desired and honestly I don’t see them having any chance here. I refuse to acknowledge Pierce, Garnett and Ray Allen as the Big 3 and I won’t even give them the Big 2 featuring Ray Allen because both Pierce and K.G. disappear way too much. Offensively Pierce has to carry the Celtics and I mean really put them on his back at least twice probably three times if they wanna win, one problem he will have Kobe guarding him and will also draw the responsibility of guarding Kobe and we all remember how having to guard Lebron killed his offense in that series. There will be one game where K.G. goes off and scores 30 something points and gets 15 + rebounds maybe even he gets 2-4 of those points in the final 5 minutes but thats it expect just one of those games because K.G. is the anti-clutch. Leaving Pierce with the responsibility to get either 3 games or 2 and hope Perkins Rondo and Ray Allen can all come alive in one game. I actually expect Perkins to continue to play damn good basketball, this kid is gonna be damn good someday and so will Rondo but Rondo is a point guard he is asked to do and think too much and with Derek Fisher guarding him playing in your face pressure D I don’t think he is quite up to the task, not yet he is still a year or two away and no Sam Cassell is not the answer. I am predicting at least two huge games from Derek Fisher ( or at least one huge game and one where he hits a crucial jumper late to win it ) Paul Gasol probably won’t go off on any one game but will be solid throughout, Odom will be Odom and have one great game followed by one bad game, and the Lakers have the edge in the bench as I look for Sasha Vujacic to stay killing the Celtics with the 3’s. Basically the Celtics just don’t have enough firepower to pull this off. Ray Allen has seemingly come back to life but is it enough ? Unless somehow K.G. snaps out of this funk he has been in his whole career and develops and entirely new personality I just don’t see how they can keep up with the Lakers, especially considering how the struggled against the Hawks and the Lebronaliers.
The Hawks and Lebrons gave the Celtics trouble because of their speed and athleticism, the Hawks were too fast and loved to get up and down the court as fast as possible and it worked well, then when they had to settle down to play a half court offense they just gave it to Joe Johnson and let him do his thing, the Celtics had no answer and I got news for you guys Kobe > Joe Johnson. The Cavs played tough hard nose D and they had Lebron who gave the Celtics fits even though he couldn’t hit a jump shot, imagine what Kobe will do if the Celtics dare him to take those same jumpers they dared Lebron to take, imagine what he will do if they try and crowd him and do the impossible and try and stop him. No the Celtics plan will and should be to let Kobe get his but limit everyone else from going off, good plan….. in theory. Thats what they did with Lebron thats what the Spurs did with Chris Paul when they started to win games but there is a fundamental difference here, they are playing Kobe not either of those 2 guys. Give them another 3-5 years in the league and the game will come to them like it has arrived for Kobe. See both Paul and Lebron like to sit back and get their team involved and let the game come to them. So they spend the first 3 quarters of the game just hanging around trying to open things up for them to take over at the end of games, again a good plan…. in theory, however that plan often backfires and when it does it’s too late to do anything about it. The biggest difference in Kobe and those 2 is Kobe’s ability to recognize when he can’t wait for the game to come to him, it might only be the first or second quarter but he must enter attack mode and enter it now or it might be too little too late by the third or fourth quarter. Sometimes the D will play soft on Lebron early in the games as they know he is looking to get his team involved early and one of these days he will recognize that and decide to enforce his will in the first quarter and open up a big lead causing the D to focus on him and then he can get his teammates involved. Kobe has that killer instinct he knows when he is needed and he knows it’s not based on time but on the flow of the game, all this will come to Lebron and Paul but right not Kobe is the only one playing that has that ability.
So the NBA got what it wanted but I’m afraid they will be disappointed in the end as I don’t expect this series to play out nearly like they want it to or to match the hype the Lakers are just a better team than the Celtics and the Celtics have too many passive aggressive players to jump up and snatch this from the clutches of the Lakers and the Black Mamba. As for me giving in and admitting Kobe is the best it had to be done and it had to be done now because I don’t want to miss this window to recognize and appreciate what we are seeing now because we are just a jump shot and about 2 1/2 post moves away from Lebron realizing all this could be for him to have so for now just enjoy watching Kobe, the games best player.

Kobe is the truth and fuck Celtic fans or people who root for the Celtics when their team sucks
@ Fux - You know I’ve been a Kobe hater but never delusional I always gave him credit just never the full credit he deserved, plus I’m so sick of hearing about Magic and Bird, unless your talking about Magic as an Exec of the Lakers neither of them have a damn thing to do with how the series goes and in the shadow of all this rivalry talk I expect Kobe to recognize the spotlight is on him and now is his chance to claim that top spot and amaze everyone
Ya is there anyway the Lakers dont win?? I actually think if any team was going to beat the Lakers it would be the Celtics because of the obvious match-up issues and there is always 1 team who has your number. Word to Suns and Spurs
I think I am going to put half a not on this game. What is the Line??
THIS WAS 1995-96, the 76ers’ 18-victory season of first-round draft choice Jerry Stackhouse and the team of Clarence Weatherspoon, Vernon Maxwell, Trevor Ruffin, Shawn Bradley, Jeff Malone, Sharone Wright and Derrick Alston.
And, during the preseason workouts and scrimmages at Saint Joseph’s University . . . Lower Merion High senior Kobe Bryant.
“He was better than anyone we had,” said Chicago Bulls assistant coach Ron Adams, then a Sixers assistant.
“He was precocious at that age, but a promising prospect,” Adams said. “It’s one thing to talk about what a player might be able to do, but it was another thing to see him play against other people, to see it firsthand. When I was with Milwaukee, Dwyane Wade [who went to Marquette] used to come over during his redshirt year and work out with some of the Bucks and some others. You get a pretty good picture of a guy.”
When it was time to draft in ‘96, the Sixers and everybody else had a pretty good picture of who Bryant was and what they thought he might become. The Sixers had the No. 1 overall pick, and were zeroed in on Allen Iverson. But doing their due diligence under the watchful, veteran eye of Gene Shue, they worked out the kid from Lower Merion. Lucas, by then, was gone. Brad Greenberg was the GM, Johnny Davis the coach.
“He had an incredible workout,” said Shue, who still scouts for the Sixers. “He had the size, you knew he would grow into a larger body, and he had one-on-one skills. He was wide-eyed, bright, spoke with authority and confidence. Remember, though, Iverson was the player at the time, with 2 years of college experience. His name had been penciled in by many teams. It was hard to go against that.”
The Sixers took Iverson, who went on to win four scoring titles and the MVP in 2000-01, helping them reach the Finals for the first time since 1982-83. Bryant went No. 13, to the then-Charlotte Hornets, and a few weeks later was traded to the Lakers for Vlade Divac.
“I remember calling Bob Bass, who was their GM,” Lucas said. “I told him about Kobe. I said, ‘We’re not taking him, but I think you should.’ They did, and Kobe refused to go there and they traded him to the Lakers. The rest is history.”
@ Fux - Celtics are favored by 2 1/2
Yo I think I am going to put 500 on the Lakers tonight… What you think? They are going to go hard tonight and there isnt a game for a couple of days after so Kobe can go all in..
“My favorite players growing up were Larry Bird and Jeff Hornacek,” he said. “Why? Because they were slow. You know what I’m saying? But they got it done.
Cassell
the Sixers are notorious for having high school kids come practice with them that are better than 98 % of the team, I don’t know if the hype that was Dejaun Wagoner ever reached San Diego but dude is from Camden and was considered the best player in the country in high school and he even dropped 100 in a game
www.youtube.com/watch?v=hYRzZDNooaA
I used to go watch his games dude could not be stopped he scored from anywhere on the court at will, he would take one or 2 steps across mid court and look bored so just chuck a 3 and nothing but net damn nigh every time
anyway he used to go practice with the Sixers and Iverson all the time Iverson couldn’t stop talking about how good he was the truth for real until he kept getting sick with them kidney and I think liver issues, poor guy is stuck lighting up the Polish league now
@ Fux - 500 is a bold move but I think they got it tonight, Like you said Kobe’s gonna come out focused going all out and he isn’t gonna wait to takeover he is gonna take over and impose his will immediately, I think they win game 1 lose game 2 and then win the next 3 at home
Word I knew of Milt’s son. Dude had coitous(sp?) some kind of Colon issue[||] …..sucks for him cuz he was sort of the 1st of these new age combo guards like Ben Gordon Gilbert Arenas OJ Mayo etc etc
Yup My Sentiments exactly Ty. I have Lakers in 5
I’m rooting for KG, but aside from that, I’m hoping that it’s a good, competitive series. I’ll take 6 close games or a classic 7-gamer.
I can see Lakers in 5, but I don’t think it’ll be that easy.
Good post, TyBal BiggInt.

good looks rey
I just think the Celtics have been overrated for awhile, the thing is the reason why they won so many games so easily in the regular season was because they tried to make every regualr season game like a playoff game so their intensity way outmatched the other teams problem is now they are in the playoffs and everyone has raised there level of play and intensity but the Celtics who are right where they have been all year, add to the fact that their team is filled with people who would rather defer to someone else just does not bode well for them, the Lakers have shooters, are fast and love to run in the open court, have a good inside game and they have the best player alive I don’t see the celtics having a shot but hey thats me

… Mike Musssina > Kobe Bryant …
started off Hustlin ended up Ballinnn(c) Chea via Weezy
lmao @ Land
I’m so glad Mussina is making me eat my words, I’ve been a hater forever but dudes had like 2 bad innings this year otherwise he has been lights out
… you know i hate him … but that shows how far the mighty Yankees have fallen, that he’s their ace … but to lead the AL in wins is shocking … he’s got the old Greg Maddux pinpoint control working … i still think the Yanks are done though, in spite of their climb back to .500 … still too old in the OF and too unstable at 1B … and too unathletic … they look so old & stiff (NH) defensively … you man be the last man standing, that has any hope for that squad … i hope you’re right …
Michael Wilbon of The Washington Post: ” … the Celtics once upon a time had the blackest team in the NBA and the league’s first black coach; everybody knows the Celtics are synonymous with whiteness, the team of white superstars and scrubs alike. When white players became an endangered species in the NBA in the late 1970s, the Celtics at times seemed to be the only team that could find any. And it became, fairly or not, a big chunk of the team’s identity, of why the Celtics were hated or beloved, depending on one’s point of view. Their appearance was as noticeable as their athletic brilliance. And at a time when pop culture was telling us white men couldn’t jump, the Celtics were a cultural curiosity and sometimes an obsession. Yet, when the Celtics take the floor for Game 1 of the NBA Finals here Thursday night, chances are pretty good there won’t be one white player in uniform. Brian Scalabrine and Scot Pollard are on the roster, but it’s likely they’ll be inactive and therefore not in uniform.”
Rick Bonnell of The Charlotte Observer: “I have an idea, and on the surface it will seem a bit reckless, but hear me out: The Bobcats should consider trading for Detroit Pistons big man Rasheed Wallace. … This could work in part because Larry Brown will coach the Bobcats. From what I hear, Brown and Wallace had a great relationship in Detroit, winning a championship together. Wallace speaks warmly of Brown, whom he calls ‘Pounds,’ as in Brown’s initials, L.B. Reuniting them could be just the tweak to get the Bobcats into the playoffs. If I were the Bobcats, I’d at least consider giving up the ninth pick, a couple of players and some salary-cap space to make that happen.”
@ Land - yeah man these next couple weeks will tell, Jorge coming back tonight should be huge the offense is picking up I still think Cano will start smashing everything soon, the part that worries me is the bullpen, that was a strength before with Joba and mariano but now with just Mariano it’s a glaring weakness, i don’t get the need to move Joba now, what good is it gonna do even if he gives 6-7 shutout innings if the ball has to go to Farnsworth or Hawkins in the 7th and 8th, unless they have a plan to go out and get some quality bullpen help this move might kill the season for them, at least Ortiz is hurt
*devil rays it up* *fixes brim*
Sorry Ty.
Being a Raptors Fan, I naturally have to root for the Celtics.

Lil’ Mama On Kinda Meeting R. Kelly:
“I met R. Kelly. I was in Chicago at a basketball game and I was performing, and he was on the floor with the basketball players, and I was performing all around the gym and all the basketball players were just looking at me, and R. Kelly was tapping on them like, ‘Yo, who’s that young girl? She’s crazy!’ And I was just rapping all hard and crazy. After I finished, they all gave me my props. He chose to stay really far away, because of the rumors and stuff like that, but he really showed his respect, and he’s a classic Chester Molester. I got respect for that guy.”

FALL RIVER, Mass. — Former Durfee High School basketball star and Boston Celtics point guard Chris Herren was found unconscious behind the wheel of a car after police said he crashed into a telephone pole in Fall River.
The accident occurred shortly after 6 p.m. Wednesday at the corner of Oak Grove Avenue and Saxon Street, police said.
Police found Herren unconscious in his car with a bag of heroin on the passenger seat next to him.
According to the Fall River Herald News, police found Herren slumped over the steering wheel of his Mitsubishi Lancer, which was partially up on the sidewalk with its engine running and in gear.
After being brought back to consciousness, Herren was taken to Chalton Memorial Hospital for treatment, the Herald News reported.
Herren faces charges of recklessly operating a motor vehicle, operating under the influence and possession of heroin.
Herren has had a history of drug problems.
In 2007, Herren, 32, was arrested on possession of a controlled substance charge and driving under the influence. He pleaded no contest and was sentenced to three years probation.
In 2005, Herren pleaded no contest in Newport Superior Court to reduced charges of driving with a suspended license and driving under the influence.
He was arrested again in Portsmouth in December 2004 after he allegedly had a seizure in his car and lost consciousness while waiting in a drive-through lane at a Dunkin’ Donuts coffee shop. When police revived him, they found 18 empty packets, containing heroin residue along with drug paraphernalia.
Herren was a former McDonald’s High School All-American and went on to play college basketball at Fresno State University.
Herren had a short NBA career that took him to Denver. He also spent time playing for the Boston Celtics.
He chose to stay really far away, because of the rumors and stuff like that, but he really showed his respect, and he’s a classic Chester Molester. I got respect for that guy.

GOSHEN TOWNSHIP, Ohio — A police officer in Ohio said he pulled over a woman he suspected was driving drunk and found the woman’s 1-year-old son steering the wheel, reported WLWT-TV in Cincinnati.
Marya Green was pulled over Tuesday.
The officer said that when he came to the driver’s window, he found Green’s 1-year-old son at the wheel, sitting in Green’s lap.
Green, 29, registered a 0.11 percent blood-alcohol level. Two other children, ages 8 and 5, were also in the car.
Green was arrested and faces charges of DUI, driving under OVI suspension, noncompliance and endangering children.
Police said this is Green’s third DUI arrest in six years.
The children were released to their father, police said.
